The Atlanta Falcons made 16 cuts Saturday. Former Georgia WR Terence Edwards remained on the team.
The Falcons cut 16 players Saturday, including five-year veteran wide receiver MarTay Jenkins. The team also cut two of six draft choices, wide receiver Jon Olinger, a fifth-round pick, and defensive back Waine Bacon, a sixth-round pick.Other defensive players released were: linemen Ronald Flemons, Reggie Grimes and rookie free agent Raymond House; linebackers Tony Ortiz, James Cotton and rookie free agent Recardo Wimbush of Georgia Tech; and cornerback Jason Waters.
On offense, the Falcons released linemen Robert Hicks of Douglass High, Kevin Dogins, Michael Moore and Dwayne Morgan of Griffin, quarterback David Rivers and running back Jeff Chaney.
Atlanta reached the NFL's 53-man roster limit with unwanted help -- league officials suspended backup strongside linebacker Keith Newman for the first four games for violating the NFL's banned substance policy.
That will cost Newman $124,706 of his $530,000 salary. "This was an inadvertent mistake," Newman said. "Evidently I took a supplement . . . that had a derivative that is against NFL policy. I'd like to apologize."
Newman's suspension means linebacker Karon Riley made the team, although he's worked almost exclusively on the weak side. Weakside linebackers Sam Rogers and Will Overstreet probably will back up the strong side.
