Babers Returns To Houston

Fourth-round draft pick Rod Babers, who left the New York Giants without notice on the weekend, returned to his home in Houston, coach Jim Fassel said Monday.

"He's fine - that was our concern, that there was something wrong with the guy," Fassel said. "I found out that his agent got hold of his parents, and they said they've talked to him and he was on a flight back to Houston."

Fassel said he has not spoken to Babers. He said the player's grandfather died on Thursday, but he did not know if that was reason he left.

The NFL granted the Giants a roster exemption for Babers, a cornerback from Texas.

The Giants cut their roster to the league-mandated 53-player limit on Sunday.

It was uncertain whether Babers would have made the final cut.
