ALABAMA VS. AUBURN

Kevin Scarbinsky argues that this past weekend's games proved that, despite a series of major setbacks, Alabama continues to be a big time program while Auburn continues to be on the outside looking in.

When Alabama talks about the national championship, it's remembering the past and planning for the future. It's not dreaming.

You can argue about tradition. You can't argue with it.

When it comes to the kind of tradition that separates a program from the herd, Alabama, even on probation, has it. Auburn, even as a paper champion, wants it in the worst way and can't get out of its own way trying to get it.

The difference between Alabama and Auburn is the difference between two marquee games on a national stage.

Alabama can lose to Oklahoma 20-13 and see the bright side. It's possible to make the best team in the polls wonder, if only for a moment, if it's the better team on the field.

This is indeed remarkable. Auburn has excellent athletes and an excellent head coach. It has a larger enrollment. Alabama is has been under the clouds of NCAA sanctions for three years now, is on its third head coach in less than a year, has limited scholarships and roster space, and is still competitive.

Oklahoma clearly had the better athletes Saturday night. Alabama did not have anywhere near the same team speed. And, yet, the game remained close until the end.
