NIU Stuns Terps, Miami Rolls Late

Miami Rolls. Kinda.
It took until late in the third quarter for the Miami Hurricanes to really put the game away against Louisiana Tech. Going into halftime with a 21-3 lead, the offense had scored only once, while a punt return and a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown accounted for the rest of their scores. Louisiana Tech was able to move the ball and control Miami’s running game surprisingly well for the lower tier team. However, the strain of playing a much more athletic team began to manifest itself on the Tech players midway through the third quarter. By late in the third quarter, the ‘Canes broke the game wide open. The rest of the game wasn’t pretty. Miami’s new quarterback, Berlin, running back, Gore, and big play receiver, true freshman Moore, have better get their A game back together or they will be facing 1-1 versus the Florida Gators next week.

Northern Illinois Pulls Greatest Upset In School History!
If you missed this game, you missed the best game on television last night. Northern Illinois showed the world last night why they are a contender for the MAC championship and that they have become a competitive team by defeating the No. 15 Maryland Terrapins 20-13 in overtime. The game was a fine example of college football at its finest and will be remembered by Husky fans for a long time.

Though I picked the wrong team and called it wrong when I said it “will probably not be a squeaker,” I have to give myself props for the following commentary from yesterday about this game—

Three years ago no one would have thought this game would feature two very talented teams able to test each other early. What is supposed to be a guarantee game for Maryland and a paycheck for Northern Illinois could turn into a thriller.

And—

Maryland will get a great test against a strong MAC team that will help them fine-tune their lineup.

NIU is my mother’s alma mater and I pulled for them the whole game. Congratulations Huskies!

Yeah, Miami started slow and finished pretty strong. And Berlin, Gore, and Co., obviously didn't have their A game going, but losing to Florida? I think the defense can step it up enough by themselves to prevent that from happening (I'm going to post more on why I think that later). I don't see them losing to Florida, even if they play like they did last night. But the game they brought to Shreveport won't win against FSU, Va. Tech or even Pitt this year.

And that NIU-Maryland game did look like it was a good one. I thought NIU showed a lot of courage coming back from the blocked field goal at the end of regulation to win it in overtime. That is a mark of a well coached program. They have every right to be rocking in DeKalb today. That may end up as one of the biggest upsets of the year.

Adam:

Chris--I'm with you in believing that Miami has Florida's number next week, but I'm pretty sure if they bring the same game to Miami next week, the Gators will exploit it.

Florida still has a lot of question marks since Spurrier left and they need to step and answer them if they're going to. If they are playing the way they did last year, I'll call it out today--Arkansas beats Florida this year.

Oh, I can believe that Florida will lose to Arkansas this year. The problem that the Gators have is, like you said, Spurrier left them with too many question marks.

The Ball Coach was Florida and Florida was the Ball Coach. The players Ron Zook has now are, for the most part, still Spurrier's leftovers. Spurrier recruited them to work perfectly within his Fun 'n Gun system.

Zook is taking a more traditional approach (which is good, again I'll explain later tonight), but he and Gator Nation are going to suffer for another year or so as they finish moving out the Spurrier specialists.
