Holtz Would Pass Hayes With Win

Lou Holtz would move into sole possession of 8th place on the all-time victory list with a win tonight.

Tonight, when South Carolina opens its season against Louisiana Lafayette, USC football coach Lou Holtz will be in pursuit of his 239th career victory. A win over the three-touchdown underdog Ragin' Cajuns would snap a tie for eighth on the all-time NCAA Division I-A victories list.

Under other circumstances, Holtz says, such an accomplishment would merit little notice.

"When you're ranked high, it just means you've been in (coaching) a long time," he says.

But this time, Holtz admits, is different because of the man he can pass: Ohio State's Woody Hayes.
