I'm going to post a (maybe, sometimes) daily column here called "Hockey Stories". It'll just be various stories from my life (or stories I've heard) that explain why hockey is really such a great game. (Click the permalink for more)
It was maybe three years ago. I went to St. Dominic Catholic Secondary School, a school that was definitely not known for its sports record. For one reason or another, we all got to go to the local arena to watch a hockey game. St. Dom's versus BMLSS (the local "good" secondary school). The game was pretty boring; just an excuse to get out of class, really. But something happened during the first intermission, as the zambonie (spelling?) came out for its traditional ride. Something welled up deep inside me, and everyone else in the arena. It was pride. Even though our team sucked (we were losing like 12-0 or something), suddenly we downright hated the other team.
When the teams took the ice again, it became a heated frenzy in the audience. Everyone on "our" side of the stands were furious. We yelled at the BMLSS players, we spat on them as they skated by, we screamed at the referee whenever a bad call was made.
I can't explain it. The team sucked. None of us cared about the team before or after that game. But for the last 40 minutes of that game, nothing else mattered.

oh alright
maybe I'll watch the national hockey team.... but you'll never pursuade me to think hockey as a great, even decent game... I'd rather watch women's bowling.
