The #3 Hurricanes are currently going into halftime against La. Tech. I was able to watch the first quarter while taking my son out for pizza. Here are some of the things I picked up after just one quarter of UM football.
1. The Hurricanes are again suffering from their traditional habit of playing down to the competition. Watching them, they seem lethargic, like they're not really interested in playing tonight.
2. Brock Berlin has a lot to learn still. He has a cannon for an arm, but he isn't thinking out there. He threw too many passes into dangerous coverages. He can get away with it in Shreveport, but not in Blacksburg.
3. The defense looks good, but seems to be gambling a little too much. La. Tech broke a couple of big plays in the second quarter because Miami was out of position. Again, they can recover in Shreveport, but not in Tallahassee.
4. This will not be the Hurricanes year. The offense is too immature and the defense has been gambling too much again this year. I see Miami being a top ten team this year, but another Championship is going to have to wait until next year.
I've been following the Hurricanes for well over 17 years now and I've found that how they play against teams like La. Tech really tells a lot as to how they will end up for the year. And so far they don't look too hot (forget the score, they're mailing it in right now).
I still find it amazing that a top ten finish can be considered a rebuilding year, but I think that that is what we've got in Coral Gables this year.

48-9 doesnt seem too lethargic to me. The Canes lost alot of players last year so many of those guys out there are really fresh to the system.
I think the canes have a habit these past few years of staring out rather slow, but, they play 4 quarters of football.

The 48-9 is deceptive. The offense didn't play anywhere near where they should have been capable of, even accounting for all the player losses.
I've been following the 'Canes since '86 and starting slow has always been an issue for them. It's also usually a big factor in the games they lose. Miami plays the fourth quarter at a higher level than almost anyone in the country. In that regards, UM is as predictable as another Dolphins December debacle. But to beat the Va. Techs of the world, Miami has got to get off to better starts.
