Bills Position Battle: Skill Positions

There are a couple battles at the skill positions that are worth watching.

Tight End: The third tight end spot is not really a big deal, so I'll keep it brief. Ryan Neufeld and Brady McDonnell are fighting for the last roster spot. Guess what? It doesn't matter which one makes the team so the Bills may as well be fair and just toss a coin.

Running Back: Sam Gash, Travis Henry, and Sammy Morris are safe. I'm guessing backup fullback Phil Crosby is too, but Sammy Morris can and has played fullback before so Crosby may be a surprise cut. If we assume Crosby makes the roster it means the Bills keep one of the following: Olandis Gary, Joe Burns, or Ken Simonton. To the Bills outsider, this appears to be a no-brainer...you keep Gary. To those who have been watching the Bills closely you know that Burns has had a heck of a camp and played well on special teams last year.

This is a tough one. Gary offers value in the trade market, Burns does not. If you feel confident that Morris can back up Henry then you can move Gary for a third or fourth rounder. Morris has three years under his belt and has, in my opinion, proven himself to be a capable runner. That scenario lets you keep Burns and his cheap cap number as well. Yet if Henry were to go down in week one or two could the Bills make the playoffs with Morris as the feature back? I'm pretty sure they could with Gary, but probably not with Morris. It's risk/reward. If it's me, I move Gary.

Wide Receiver: Moulds, Reed, and Shaw are 1-2-3. I'll go out on a limb and say Clarence Coleman (aka: The Cooler. Props to my brother-in-law for that one) makes the team. If you disregard the Bills own web site's idiotic statement that the Bills may keep only four receivers and use logic, you will come to the conclusion they will keep at least five and perhaps six receivers. That leaves Sam Aiken, Rodney Wright, Charles Johnson and Antonio Brown to battle for one or two spots.

I think Aiken has the inside track because the Bills spent a fourth rounder on him this year. The Bills love Johnson's experience and leadership. Brown ran back an 87 yard punt return for a TD in the first preseason game. Wright appears to be on the outside looking in. In the end, is anyone excited about keeping Charles Johnson as the sixth receiver? Will we look back after the playoffs and think "Thank goodness we kept Charles Johnson around? Did you see the leadership he provided from the inactive list week in and week out?"

Keep the young, speedy, and talented Brown and see what develops. Guys like Johnson are a dime a dozen, and this team has plenty of leaders now.
