Berlin, Miami & The Ball Coach

Brock Berlin.

He's probably the one player who will have the most effect on the Miami Hurricanes this year. He's got a cannon arm and excellent accuracy. But he doesn't have the mental game of Ken Dorsey, yet.

Berlin is a transfer from Florida. He was trained under Steve Spurrier. And it shows. He suffers from the same flaw as basically every other quarterback to come out of Florida.

He doesn't read progressions real well.

Spurrier was a former quarterback. He is a genius for offensive game planning. He is a great judge of talent. But he never was a great quarterback coach.

Spurrier's great idea at Florida was the Fun 'n Gun offense. Basically he tried to find the fastest receivers he could and game planned routes that would get them open. Then all he needed was a QB that could put the ball on the money.

And that is exactly what he had, very accurate QBs.

But the Fun 'n Gun is based on the idea of exact timing. The assumption is that the receiver will be open. And most of the time, with the speed receivers of Florida, they are.

However, if the primary receiver is not open, it presents problems. UF QBs were never really all the great at reading to the second, third or even fourth receivers. Great defenses beat Florida by forcing the QB to try to make those progressions.

Last night, Berlin was showing his inexperience at making those progression reads. Several times he threw into tight coverage while other receivers were open. He came real close to having two or three picks instead of one.

Berlin has better physical talent than Dorsey. But we Miami fans have been spoiled by three years of Dorsey beating teams with smart throws. If Berlin can pick up the mental part of the game he could be the best QB to come out of Miami since Jim Kelly. It's just going to take time.

And that's why I don't think that UM will be playing in the Sugar Bowl this year.

Brock Berlin has to come to... (Below threshold)
TheeImage:

Brock Berlin has to come to the realization that God nor Jesus cares one whit whether he throws for a touchdown or a first down or anything else about football! They also don't care if Sammy Sosa hits a home run! People are dying all over the world and in this country! In Iraq, Ethiopia, Tibet, China, etc.,etc. Does anyone think He really cares about sports? Can any of them really get real? Put the responsibility on where it really lies? Maybe themselves? Are they all nuts? Or is it me?
